How To Unleash The Power Of Your Core
Desires
Every person has a vast resource of untapped
power. Learning how to identify and direct this potential through persistence
and proper action will unleash a powerful motivation. We all have this special
motivation and all the success and happiness we achieve in life is a result of
this powerful motivating force.
This powerful force is an inherent, “already
there” motivation you have to achieve something in life you really want. It is
a force that is already within you, that drives you to get what you truly want.
Motivation from an outside source does not have a lasting effect, if any at all
and this outside motivation usually only scratches the surface, with little or
no lasting power.
Where does this powerful motivating force come
from? It comes from our “core desires.” A core desire is a genuine, clearly
defined want that causes us to be willing to put forth the effort necessary to
make that desire become reality, even when it means overcoming insurmountable
or seemingly insurmountable obstacles. A core desire is not just a wish, a
dream, or a hope. It’s a powerful deep want.
We all have core desires. They exist in the
lives of every one of us. But most people’s core desires never become reality,
because they never discover what they are.
To discover what your core values are you need
to make a list of everything you think that you’d really like to have or do.
Don’t list anything that you “should” or “ought to” do. Don’t list what someone
else wants you to do. Don’t list things that would be nice to have or do. Try
to be honest with yourself. List only those things that you know, to the best
of your ability that you’d really like to have.
Next, clearly define what you think you have to
do to get what you’ve listed. In other words, what are going to have to do to
achieve your core desire? This won’t be easy, because you won’t always know how
to do what it takes.
If you’re not willing to make a plan for
achieving an item on your list, then it isn’t a genuine core desire, and the
motivating force to get it won’t be there. So, take it off your list. Be
careful not to be too hasty in deleting an item just because you don’t
immediately see how you’re going to get it. If you act too hastily, you may
miss one of your core desires.
Not knowing how to do something doesn’t mean
that you don’t want it. Don’t place any limitations on yourself as you go
through this process. If you can’t see how you’re going to achieve a core
desire easily and quickly, don’t assume that it isn’t a core desire. It is only
when you’re willing to give up or quit on it that you can determine that it
isn’t a genuine core desire.
In deciding what to include on your list, one of
your criteria should be what you would do if money were not an issue. Ask
yourself: “What would I like to be doing in this area of my life if money were
not in issue?” This question frees up your thinking to be as big as you want it
to be.
Some other questions you should ask yourself to
determine if something is a genuine core desire are: “What would I do if only I
had the time.” “What makes me laugh?” “What did I enjoy doing when I was a
young adult?” “If I could have anything I wanted, what would it be?”
It’s important that you do not put any limits on
your thinking, instead try to be as honest and introspective as possible. It
doesn’t matter what your core desire is. If the desire is great enough then you
want to do it. Remember when you’re working toward a genuine core desire, your
motivation will automatically engage. Then you will have the power to act effectively
to get what you want.
Here are five ways that will help you clearly
define the direction you must take to get that core desire you want:
1. Use mentors. If you want to know how to do
something, talk to people who are skilled in or successful at it. Ask them how
to do it. For example, if you want to make $300,000 a year, don’t ask someone
who is earning $50,000 to teach you. He or she will be able to teach you only
how they got to their level of income.
2. Become an avid reader. For every core desire
there is at least one if not multiple books on the subject. There is at least
one of more publications or industry trade journals on your core desire as
well.
3. Listen to audio programs. There are thousands
of CD’s and DVD’s available, pertaining to nearly every area of life, to help
you achieve your core desires.
4. Attend seminars on a regular basis. Attend as
many as you can every year, at least four a year. Just be sure that the seminar
is in the same field as is one of your genuine core desires.
5. Take educational courses. Courses are
potentially among the most powerful and helpful experiences you will ever have.
They typically last two to five days and are designed to help you overcome
personal obstacles that hinder your growth, that keep you stuck, and limit your
power to achieve your core desires. Before you take any course, be sure that
it’s a reputable one and that it will help you to achieve one of your core
desires.
There will always be risks and obstacles in
achieving your core desires. There will be risks and problems in every area of
your life, including financial. You cannot let them stop you. It’s a fact that
when you’re working toward a genuine core desire, fear is not a limiting force
anymore. If it’s a genuine core desire, fear will not stop you. You might have
some doubts. You might even have a great deal of fear every now and then, but
you won’t let doubts and fear, stop you. You’ll do it anyway.
The reason why most people give up or quit is
that their supposed core desire is, in realty, not genuine. It’s doesn’t
radiate an all encompassing motivational force. When it is genuine core desire
it may take several shots and adjustments before you achieve it, but you will
achieve it.
